A photovoltaic system needs minimal but consistent maintenance. Two interventions per year ensure nominal performance for 25+ years.

Spring maintenance (March-April)

  • Cleaning the panels: demineralized water + soft brush. Winter dust, pollen and deposits reduce production by 5-10%.
  • Checking the assembly structure: screws, supports, seals. Weaknesses may occur after the winter frost.
  • Visual inspection of connections: MC4, junction boxes, AC/DC cables. Look for blackening or signs of corrosion.
  • Insulation test: with a multimeter, measure the panel-mass insulation resistance. Must be >40 MΩ.

Autumn maintenance (September-October)

  • Preparation for winter: check all connections withstand freeze-thaw.
  • Cleaning leaves + nests: birds build nests under panels in summer — remove them.
  • Inverter check: error logs, fan temperature, output wave quality.
  • Backup settings: saves inverter settings via VictronConnect or manufacturer's app.

Monthly checks (from the app, no climbing on the roof)

  • Daily production vs historical average (alert if it drops above 10%)
  • Battery state of charge (between 20-95% ideal for LiFePO4)
  • Current errors or warnings in the inverter
  • Battery charge/discharge behavior

Alarm signals

Call a specialist immediately if:

  • Production suddenly drops by 30%+ for no apparent reason (new shade, weather)
  • Inverter displays critical error code (E13, E18, F90, etc.)
  • See cracks or stains on panels
  • You smell electricity (very dangerous, turn off the system immediately)

Useful equipment for maintenance

  • Digital multimeter (40-150 lei)
  • Brush with telescopic tail (60 lei)
  • Monitoring application (VictronConnect, free)
  • IR device for detecting hot spots (~500 lei)
