The 2 Victron battery monitoring solutions — what's the difference, when you choose one or the other. Here's everything you need to know to make the right choice.

1. BMV-712 Smart — the classic with display

BMV-712 is the traditional monitor with:

  • Own LCD display (4 buttons for navigation)
  • Built-in Bluetooth
  • Shunt 500A (standard) or 1000A (variant)
  • Auxiliary inputs (temperature, midpoint deviation, second battery)
  • Price: ~190 €

Recommended when you want a visible physical display in the living room, RV, or cabin.

2. SmartShunt — the minimalist version

SmartShunt eliminates the physical display:

  • It does NOT have its own display — monitoring via VictronConnect
  • Built-in Bluetooth
  • Shunt 500A or 1000A
  • Much smaller (1/3 the size of BMV)
  • Price: ~€140 (25% cheaper)

3. Decision table

Simple little cottageBMV-712 (direct visual)
Large professional off-grid systemSmartShunt + Lynx Shunt VE.Can

4. Accuracy of measurement

Both use the same calibrated resistive shunt principle. Accuracy:

  • Current: ±0.4%
  • Voltage: ±0.3%
  • SOC (State of Charge): after calibration, ±2%

They are among the most accurate battery monitors in the industry.

Conclusion

Victron Energy remains the gold standard in solutions for serious photovoltaic systems. At EcoSolaris you can find the entire Victron range with local stock and technical support in Romanian. See all Victron products or contact us for consultation.

Cerbo GX with 50″ touch display costs around €600 in total. Worth it for systems with 3+ Victron components — see everything live, control everything on screen. We also recommend Inverter 48V MultiPlus-II 48/8000 Victron.

For advanced ESS configuration we recommend updating the MultiPlus-II firmware to the latest version (FW 580+). There are major improvements to the BatteryLife algorithm. We also recommend Inverter 48V MultiPlus-II GX 48/5000 Victron.
