Galvanic isolator VDI-16, VDI-32 and VDI-64 Victron Energy
The galvanic isolator VDI-16, VDI-32 and VDI-64 is an essential device for preventing electrolytic corrosion on boats that connect to shore power sources. Electrolytic corrosion can damage the underwater metal components of the boat, such as the hull, propeller and shaft, due to low voltage DC currents entering the boat through the shore power ground cable. The galvanic isolator blocks these currents, thus protecting the boat's components.
The isolator is internally composed of two diodes connected in anti-parallel mode. This configuration allows current to pass in both directions, but only above a certain voltage threshold. The diodes start to conduct current only at a voltage of approximately 1.4 Vdc, which is greater than the potential difference between the metals. Thus, the galvanic insulator prevents any electrolytic current from circulating, thus protecting the metal components of the boat. If there is a higher error voltage in the AC circuit, the diodes will allow the current to pass, and the residual current protection device will interrupt the circuit.
Technical specifications:
– Available models: VDI-16, VDI-32, VDI-64
– Conduction threshold voltage: approximately 1.4 Vdc
– Connection: installed directly behind the boat's 230V connection
– Internal components: two anti-parallel connected diodes
